When to Resurface a Pool in New Braunfels: Signs, Lifespan and the Best Season
New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing explains when to resurface a pool in New Braunfels, Texas. The short answer: once the finish is past patching. For timing, no standard or maker names a best season, so the makers' weather limits and the city's drain rule set the dates.
Below are the signs of a failing finish, how long each surface lasts, and how local weather lines up with those limits. Stains alone may only need a pool acid wash, and limited damage can often be patched as part of pool replastering. Estimates are free, and we'll talk through timing before anything is booked.

Signs it's time to resurface a pool
The plastering industry draws the line where patching stops working: when cracks and wear are past repair, or the pool no longer looks acceptable. These are the signs that point that way:
- Etching: rough, eaten-away patches, which often start as small spots around the stones and the tile.
- Hollow or loose finish: found by tapping. When a finish comes away from the shell, that is delamination.
- Color loss: the National Plasterers Council traces most of it to three causes. Calcium salts can mask the pigment, scale or metal stains can coat it, or the cement itself can dissolve.
- Cracks with leak signs: water dropping faster than evaporation explains, or an auto-fill valve that keeps running. Soggy ground near the shell and tile lifting off the top edge are on a crack-repair maker's list too.
- Scale and stains that no longer clean off.
When an acid wash or a patch is enough
Not every sign means a new finish. Heavy scale and stains can come off with an acid wash, which takes away the top layer, a plaster maker says. Etching is permanent, though, and sanding only partly helps. Each wash thins the surface, which caps how often it can be done. A crack that runs through the shell itself is a structural repair, not a resurfacing job. If the finish is still under a maker's warranty, the council advises calling the builder or plasterer before any repair.

How long pool finishes last
Surface life depends on the material and on the water it sits in. Typical figures, by surface:
- White plaster: 5 to 8 years, the council's resurfacing figure, though it puts the top end at 20 years with proper care.
- Quartz: 10 to 15 years. Polished: 8 to 12. Pebble: 12 to 18. All three are the council's figures.
- Fiberglass: usually at least 20 or 30 years old before it needs refinishing, says River Pools, a fiberglass pool maker.
- Vinyl liners: 10 to 15 years, says a liner maker.
- Pool paint: about 5 to 8 years for epoxy, 3 to 5 for synthetic rubber and 2 to 3 for acrylic, on one paint maker's recoat schedule.
Water chemistry can cut those numbers sharply. The same paint maker says poor chemistry control can shorten a coating's life by 50% or more. For cement finishes, the council warns that water left aggressive (low in calcium, pH or alkalinity) for long periods can severely shorten their life. A lasting finish needs three things, one pebble maker sums up: a quality product, a quality installation and a well-kept pool.

(830) 302-4112The best season to resurface a pool in New Braunfels
No standard, code or set of finish makers' instructions names a best month. The council says no standard even limits the air temperature for plastering. What exists are each maker's own weather limits, set for the days around the work.
The makers' weather limits
One maker wants its quartz and pebble finishes held between 50°F and 100°F from 24 hours before placement until 72 hours after. Others set only a cold limit. A second quartz maker says to apply above 40°F. PebbleTec's maker allows cold-weather placement when the daily average temperature is above 40°F, on a shell that isn't frozen.
Pool paints have tighter windows. One paint maker wants air and surface temperatures between 50°F and 90°F, nights no colder than 50°F while it cures, and no rain on the way. Cure time also stretches as it cools: one epoxy maker asks for 3 days before filling at 75°F to 85°F, but 6 days at 60°F to 65°F.
New Braunfels weather against those limits
Federal climate averages for 1991–2020 put most of the city's freezing nights in winter: 10.5 in January, 9.4 in December and 6.2 in February. March and November average 2.9 and 2.7. There's a 50 percent chance the last spring freeze has come by March 8, and the first fall freeze by November 18.
Summer pushes the other way. July averages 27.9 days at 90°F or hotter and August 28.4, and the year brings 11.0 days at 100°F or more. A 100°F day is outside that 50°F to 100°F window, and so is a freezing night.
Wind, rain and the hottest days
For fresh plaster, wind matters more than heat. In a council bulletin, a 100°F day didn't push drying past the danger point until sustained wind passed 5 mph. A mild 75°F day crossed it once sustained wind topped 12 to 13 mph. The council's answer is to start earlier in the morning and, where possible, avoid the windiest part of the day.
Rain matters most for painting and for an empty shell. May, June and September are the wettest months here, averaging 3.63, 3.56 and 3.53 inches. One paint maker says not to paint when rain is forecast within 3 days.
Because those limits cover the hours around the work, the forecast for those days counts for more than the month on the calendar.

(830) 302-4112Draining and scheduling under the drought plan
Since October 1, 2026, the city's pool rules have applied all year, not just in declared drought stages, so no season sidesteps them. Draining is allowed only to let out rainwater above the normal level, to deal with a pool part that has turned hazardous, or to repair a leak. Whatever is drained must go onto soil or other ground that soaks it up.
The plan is silent on resurfacing. Ask New Braunfels Utilities' Conservation Coordinator well before the work date. Written requests for an exception, called a variance, are reviewed within 30 days.
Wet spells raise the stakes for an empty pool. With too little water inside, groundwater can push a shell out of place, and clay holds that water longest, a fiberglass pool maker explains. The federal soil survey maps deep clays on the Blackland Prairie side of the Balcones Escarpment, which runs through eastern Comal County.

(830) 302-4112Pool resurfacing timing questions
What time of year is best to resurface a pool?
No standard or maker picks one. What they set are limits for the days around the work, such as one maker's 50°F to 100°F for its quartz and pebble finishes. In New Braunfels, freezing nights cluster from December to February, and 11.0 days a year reach 100°F or more, so those are the days to plan around. Check the city's drain rule with its water utility first, since it applies in every season.
How long should a pool replaster last?
Plan on 5 to 8 years for a white plaster surface, the National Plasterers Council's resurfacing figure. The council stretches that to as much as 20 years, but only with proper care. A pebble maker's own comparison speaks of the 'standard five-year lifespan' of most plaster. Quartz and pebble last longer: 10 to 15 and 12 to 18 years, by the council's figures.
Can a pool be resurfaced in winter in New Braunfels?
On the right days, often yes. Two makers allow cold-weather work above a 40°F limit, as long as the shell isn't frozen and the fresh finish can't freeze before the pool is filled. The risk is a hard freeze soon after. Finish makers exclude freeze-thaw damage, such as cracking, delamination and lost stones, from their warranties.
How soon can the heater run after resurfacing?
Not right away, which matters for a cool-season job. PebbleTec's maker says to wait at least 14 days before heating. The council's filling tips say 28 days. A pool industry fact sheet says to follow the finish maker, normally 2 to 4 weeks.
