Pool coping materials: travertine, stone, brick and concrete
Laticrete, a maker of tile-setting materials, defines coping as the cap that finishes a pool's edge. It can be cast in place or precast, or made from brick, stone, metal or plastic. Whatever it's made of, the city's pool code requires coping to be slip resistant and cleanable, like the deck and step surfaces around it.
Travertine pool coping
Travertine is really a type of limestone, the Natural Stone Institute says. All true travertine has small holes, called voids, left by gases trapped as the stone formed. It's now much more common to fill them during fabrication, with a cement or resin filler, though some stone is sold unfilled. Voids just under the surface can break open later under heavy, concentrated loads. Filling them in place as they appear is accepted, common practice.
Travertine also varies more than any other natural stone, the institute adds. Ask for a range of samples before it's ordered, and have the pieces mixed from every pallet on a larger order.
Brick and precast coping
Brick coping is fired clay. One brick coping maker fires its coping at near 2000°F and says it won't fade in the sun or bleed color from pool chemicals. Fired clay varies in shade naturally, so it suggests mixing pieces from several cartons on site. Precast coping is made in molds off site, from concrete or pressed clay, then brought in and set on the pool.
Poured concrete and cantilevered edges
Cast-in-place coping is concrete formed right on top of the bond beam, the top edge of the pool shell. A cantilevered edge works differently. The deck itself reaches out over the bond beam and the waterline tile, and it has to be free to slide over the beam. One deck-form maker attaches its foam forms to the tile on gunite (sprayed concrete) pools. A layer of 15 lb felt over the bond beam then acts as a bond breaker, a layer that stops the concrete sticking. That way the deck can expand and contract without disturbing the tile.

How coping is replaced on the bond beam
The bond beam underneath
The bond beam is where the coping sits and the waterline tile is set, says Torque Lock, a maker of crack-repair staples. It should be thicker than the wall and carry more steel, though that is hardly ever the case, it says. Many pools are shot low and topped up later, which leaves a weak seam called a cold joint. That's why bond beam breaks almost always run in a straight, horizontal line. Pressure from the deck, tree roots and water getting in also cause them.
A broken beam has to be fixed before new coping goes on. In the maker's method, the coping and tile come off, and loose material is removed down to solid gunite. Steel dowels are epoxied in every 6 to 8 inches and tied to a horizontal bar. The beam is then re-formed and poured, and the coping and tile are reset. Our pool crack repair page covers cracks in the shell and the beam.
Setting new coping
One paver and coping maker sets coping on a concrete pool this way. The top of the wall is roughened so the mortar grips. Each piece is glued to the wall with concrete adhesive and bedded on mortar behind. The coping overhangs about 2 inches and slopes 2% away from the water, and the corners go in first. Joints are about 1/4 inch wide, filled with a flexible grout. On curved pools, pieces should be no longer than 18 inches.
Mortar is strong but doesn't flex, another coping maker notes, and it can leave efflorescence: white mineral salts that work their way to the surface. Precast and stone coping need a firm bond to the beam, set by a thin-set (a thin cement-based adhesive) or mortar-bed method, a tile-industry report adds.
The joint between coping and deck
The city's pool code is the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. It requires the joint where coping meets a concrete deck to protect the coping and its mortar bed from the deck's movement. A pool engineering firm explains the risk. Without a flexible joint that runs the full depth of the deck, an expanding slab can push coping loose and crack the waterline tile. Our pool deck resurfacing page covers the deck side of that joint.
The coping and the waterline tile share the bond beam. Our pool tile replacement page covers the tile below the coping. If that tile has to be reset too, a tile-setting maker wants the pool drained and dry first. Coping and tile work aren't among the reasons the city's drought plan allows a drain, so check with New Braunfels Utilities before the pool is emptied.

Freezes and swelling clay: pool coping in New Braunfels
Freezing and thawing
Winter brings freezes here, and stone and brick feel them. Repeated freezing and thawing can damage tile, stone, brick, coping and concrete, the National Plasterers Council says. Water soaked into the pores grows by about 9% in volume each time it freezes. The council adds that freeze damage isn't a material or workmanship defect.
Federal climate averages for 1991–2020 give New Braunfels 32.0 nights a year at or below 32°F, with 10.5 in January and 9.4 in December. In February 2021, the high at the city's airport on the 15th was just 15°F. For stone coping, how much water the stone takes in matters. Water absorption across limestones and travertines runs from under 1% to over 10%, the Natural Stone Institute says.
Clay that swells and shrinks
The Balcones Escarpment splits the area into Hill Country and Blackland Prairie, and the prairie soils are mainly deep clays. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's soil survey for Comal and Hays counties rates Houston Black and Heiden clays high for shrink-swell. Wet and dry spells keep some of these clays in a continuous cycle of swelling and shrinking.
That movement reaches the coping through the deck and the shell. Cracks caused by ground that swells and shrinks should be expected to keep moving, one leak-detection equipment maker says, and a repair must allow for it. Part of Hollywood Park sits on Anhalt clay, which reaches 15.9 percent on the federal shrink-swell measure; New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing also offers pool coping replacement in Hollywood Park.

Pool coping replacement cost in the San Antonio area
On 2025 San Antonio-area figures, full coping replacement done with a resurfacing job typically adds $2,500 to $7,000. Where it lands depends on the material and the length of the pool's edge. Typical Texas figures from 2026 put a standard 15 by 30 foot pool, with about 90 to 100 linear feet of coping, at $4,000 to $8,000 in mid-range materials. The bond beam's condition moves that number too.
Those are published figures, not quotes from New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing. National cost figures from 2026 note that replacing old coping costs more than installing new. A real number needs the edge measured, and the estimate is free. When coping is one part of a larger renovation, our pool remodeling page covers the whole job.

What is the average cost to replace pool coping?
National figures differ by source and year. A 2025 national average puts replacing coping at $30 to $50 per linear foot. A 2026 national figure gives $40 to $80, depending on the material, the pool's size and shape, the coping style and local labor. Repairs short of a full replacement run $500 to $3,000 on 2026 Texas figures. For a price on your own pool's edge, ask New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing for a free estimate.
Is travertine a good pool coping?
It can be, with the right care. Travertine is mostly calcium carbonate, so acids attack it, and the Natural Stone Institute recommends mild, non-acidic cleaners. Around pools, it suggests flushing with clear water and a mild bleach solution for algae or moss. Stone "sealers" are really repellents that make stone more stain resistant, not stain proof, and many stones don't need one. Ask the stone supplier which product suits the stone and how often to use it.
What type of stone is best for pool coping?
No industry body names one best stone, so a few checks matter more than the name. The city's pool code wants coping slip resistant and easy to clean. Freezing damages stone through water held in its pores, the plastering industry explains, so how much water a stone soaks up matters. Relatively few limestone varieties have a successful history in outdoor paving, especially where it freezes and thaws, the Natural Stone Institute adds. And stone made of calcium carbonate, like travertine and limestone, is sensitive to acid cleaners.
Is it easy to replace pool coping?
It's skilled work, and much depends on what's underneath. On a concrete pool, the coping is bonded to the bond beam, and a cracked beam is rebuilt first. On vinyl-liner and fiberglass pools, coping sits on a reinforced concrete collar poured around the pool, at least 6 by 6 by 6 inches. One stone maker lets that collar cure for at least 3 days. One brick coping maker also warns that skipping its installation steps can void its conditional limited warranty.
Does replacing pool coping need a permit in New Braunfels?
Possibly. The city requires a permit whenever a structure is altered or repaired, but it doesn't say whether replacing coping counts. Its online portal takes Pool/Spa and Alteration/Remodel applications, and contractors working inside the city limits must be registered with the city. Put the question to the city's Development Services office before booking the coping work.
