Pool Crack Repair in New Braunfels, TX

New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing handles pool crack repair in New Braunfels, Texas, for cracks in the concrete shell under a pool's finish. Those are structural cracks, and they're fixed differently from fine cracks in the plaster. Depending on the crack, the repair seals it, fills it with an injected foam, or ties it shut with steel or carbon-fiber staples.

Call about the crack, or describe it in the form, and the estimate is free. We'll talk through how wide the crack is and where it runs, whether the pool is losing water, the clay soil it sits in, and the city's rules on draining.

Structural crack running down a drained pool wall and across the floor

Structural and surface cracks in a pool shell

A concrete pool has two layers. The shell is the structure: concrete cast in forms, or sprayed concrete (shotcrete, called gunite when it's sprayed dry) over a grid of steel bars. The finish is the plaster, quartz or pebble coat on top. Plaster isn't designed to give a pool structural strength, a finish maker says, and a crack in the shell can show through it.

Reading a crack's width and direction

Torque Lock, a maker of crack-repair staples, offers rules of thumb. A surface crack stays in the finish, and a cosmetic one is often under 1/16 inch wide. A structural crack runs deep through the shell. In a shell wall, a vertical crack wider than 1/8 inch is a red flag. A horizontal crack is worse, and a diagonal crack at the corner of a skimmer opening is a strong sign. These widths are the maker's guidance, not a building-code figure. A firm answer takes a drained pool and a small sample of plaster cut out, the finish maker adds.

When a crack needs an engineer

The same maker says to bring in a structural engineer when:

  • a crack in the shell is wider than 1/4 inch;
  • a diagonal crack runs from the corner of a skimmer or light niche;
  • the deck shows new cracks along with sloping or uneven spots;
  • the ground under the pool may be moving.

Water loss is the other warning, and our pool leak detection page covers how a leak is traced. Breaks along the bond beam, the top edge that carries the tile and coping, almost always run horizontally. That beam is rebuilt before new coping goes on, as our pool coping replacement page explains.

Why pool shells crack in New Braunfels

The staple maker's list of causes:

  • a new shell shrinks as it dries, leaving hairline cracks in its first year;
  • the ground under a pool settles in its first years, and heavy settling damages the shell;
  • clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, stressing the shell and deck again and again;
  • groundwater can push up on an empty pool and crack a wall along a horizontal line;
  • water reaching the steel inside the shell rusts it, the steel swells, and the concrete splits;
  • tree roots can lift the deck and crack the shell wall over time.

Shrink-swell clay on both sides of the Balcones Escarpment

Clay is the local factor. Eastern Comal County is split by the Balcones Escarpment, with the Hill Country on one side and the Blackland Prairie on the other. Soils on the Hill Country side are mostly shallow and stony, the largest group over hard limestone. On the prairie side, they're mainly deep clays. Houston Black, for one, is typically very dark gray clay to about 50 inches down.

Many of these clays are rich in montmorillonite, a clay mineral that takes up water. They swell as they take it up and shrink and crack as they dry out, says the federal soil survey for Comal and Hays counties. The movement is strong enough to crack walls and foundations that weren't properly designed. The survey names Anhalt, Branyon, Ferris, Heiden, Houston Black and Medlin as the soils where foundations are most at risk.

A crack caused by moving ground isn't a one-time event. Anderson Manufacturing, a maker of leak-detection equipment, says to expect it to keep moving and to plan the repair around that.

Federal soil maps put Houston Black clay under 52.2 percent of Santa Clara, and pool crack repair in Santa Clara is a job New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing takes on.

How structural pool cracks are repaired

The city's pool code wants every pool watertight, with a smooth, easily cleaned surface and no cracks or joints other than structural ones. The equipment maker cited above describes three levels of repair for a leaking crack. They are a surface fix with the pool still full, a more permanent injection, or removing concrete and re-engineering the structure. The choice turns on the crack, how lasting a fix is wanted, and the budget.

Sealing the crack

Epoxy putty can go on underwater and is easy to match to the surface. But it sets rigid, so later movement breaks the seal, and these repairs often need attention every year, Anderson says. Sealant repairs usually drain the pool and cut a V-shaped groove along the crack. A bead of sealant goes in the bottom of the V, and plaster repair compound fills the rest. Not every maker cuts a V: a crystalline waterproofing maker and a hydraulic cement maker both rule V-shaped cuts out for their products.

Low-pressure crack injection

Injection reaches deeper. In Anderson's method, the pool is drained and the shell dried on both sides of the crack. Ports are glued over it every 12 to 18 inches, and the surface between them is sealed with epoxy. A urethane foam is pumped in at a steady pressure of about 40 pounds per square inch (psi). It expands up to 7 times its volume, filling the crack and any gaps behind the shell. Once the pool is empty, a basic 10 to 15 foot injection takes about half a day, the maker says.

Staples across the crack

Where a crack is expected to keep moving, Anderson sets staples across it before injection. These are short bars of rebar, stainless steel or carbon fiber, set in epoxy below the plaster every 8 to 12 inches. Carbon fiber can't rust, so it can't bleed rust stains through the plaster.

In Torque Lock's system, a light mist over the dry shell shows the crack's full length, and a small hole drilled at each end stops it spreading. A staple then goes in every 12 inches. One of the maker's pages describes this on a dry shell; another says the pool stays full in most cases.

Once the shell is sound, the finish over the crack needs patching or a whole new coat. A plaster patch is nearly impossible to match in color, a finish maker warns, which is worth weighing before choosing between a patch and pool replastering.

Draining a pool for crack repair in New Braunfels

Sealant and injection repairs need an empty pool, so the city's drought plan comes in. The amended plan has applied to pools in every month since October 1, 2026. Draining is allowed for only three reasons: lowering rainwater, fixing a pool part that has become hazardous, or repairing a leak. The water must go onto ground that soaks it up. The plan doesn't mention cracks. Whether a crack repair qualifies is New Braunfels Utilities' call, so ask before the pool is emptied.

An empty pool carries a risk of its own. Groundwater can press up on the shell, and trade guidance warns that this can crack walls or even lift a pool out of place where water tables run high. Its advice: check the groundwater and the soil before any drain.

Questions about cracks in a pool shell

Can a crack in a pool be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. A crack can be sealed, injected, stapled or, at worst, cut out and rebuilt. Which one fits depends on whether the crack is still moving. Cracks from swelling and shrinking clay should be expected to keep moving, so they need a filler that flexes or staples to hold them. A shell crack wider than 1/4 inch, or ground that may be moving, calls for a structural engineer first.

What is the most effective sealant for repairing pool cracks?

No single product suits every crack. The American Shotcrete Association, an industry body, advises a product that fills the crack and tolerates later movement, not a brittle one, and says many injectable polyurethane grouts do that. Very fine cracks need a runnier epoxy or polyurethane, and an engineer or injection specialist should look at them first. Epoxy putty sets rigid, which is why it often needs redoing every year.

How much does it cost to repair a crack in a pool?

On 2026 national figures, a hairline crack in the shell costs $200 to $500 to repair properly before resurfacing. Longer, deeper or moving cracks cost more, as the price lists above show.

Will a repaired pool crack come back?

It can, if the cause is still there. A rigid patch over a moving crack tends to fail, which is why Anderson staples cracks it expects to move. New concrete added to an old pool can also crack along the joint a year or two later if the old surface wasn't properly prepared, trade guidance warns. For buildings on swelling clay, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists good drainage, plant choices, sprinkling and long-term upkeep as ways to steady soil moisture.

Does pool crack repair need a permit in New Braunfels?

Ask before work starts. The city adopted the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code as its pool code. That code holds a repair to its rules for new work, without forcing the rest of the pool up to date. The city also requires a permit to alter or repair a structure. It doesn't say whether a crack repair counts, so check with Development Services, which handles the city's permits.
