Pool Liner Replacement in New Braunfels, TX

New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing handles pool liner replacement in New Braunfels, Texas, for in-ground vinyl liner pools. A new liner is cut to the pool's own measurements and hangs from a track at the top of the wall. Latham, a liner maker, says liners typically last 10 to 15 years, depending on water chemistry, sun, use and thickness.

Ask for a free liner estimate by phone or with the form. We'll talk through liner thickness, measuring, the makers' warranty terms and the city's drain rule before a liner is ordered.

Signs a vinyl pool liner needs replacing

Latham lists the signs that a liner is due:

  • cracks, tears or wrinkles;
  • fading so heavy that you can no longer make out the pattern;
  • slipping or stretching out of its track, so the pool wall shows through;
  • the liner coming away from its bead.

What wears a liner out early

Merlin, another liner maker, names the usual causes of early aging: a liner stressed too hard at installation, pollutants and sun at the waterline, and the wrong pH. High pH leaves scale on the vinyl. Low pH draws out the plasticizers, the softeners in the vinyl, so it dries out and wrinkles.

Merlin also warns against letting concentrated chlorine collect in the pool. Automatic cleaners, rubber-soled swim socks, some vacuum heads, brushes, toys and chemical cleaners can rub off the printed pattern. Makers' warranties don't cover that kind of wear.

Pool liner thickness: mil, gauge and durability

Liner thickness is given in mils, thousandths of an inch. The common replacement thicknesses are 20 and 27 mil, Latham says, and a thicker liner can feel more substantial underfoot.

Mil and gauge aren't the same

Watch the units on a quote. In some areas thickness is called gauge, and gauge and mil aren't equal. A liner sold as 30 gauge may measure 27 mil, or 0.027 inch, so ask which unit the dealer means.

What a thicker liner buys

Thicker costs more and lasts better. A 27 mil liner costs more to install than a 20 mil one but is more durable, in Latham's words. On 2023 national averages, moving from a liner of 20 mil or less up to 30 mil adds $700 to $1,000.

Merlin points to an industry performance standard for in-ground vinyl liners. Liners certified to it have passed its series of tests, and it applies to liners of 20 mil or more.

How a vinyl pool liner is replaced

  1. Measure the pool

    The liner is made from the measurements, so they have to be right. Latham's measuring book takes every depth from the bead receptor, the track the liner hangs in, and plots odd shapes by triangulation to about 1/4 inch. Its list of common errors includes assuming a standard size, when over 10 corner sizes, 3 corner types and 10 wall heights are each called standard by someone. Skipping the diagonals that prove the pool is square is another. So is adjusting the numbers, which the maker does itself when it cuts the liner.

  2. Drain a vinyl pool with care

    Latham says to talk to the pool dealer before draining a vinyl pool. With enough water pressure from below, a vinyl liner can bubble and float, a pool maker warns, and clay soil holds water around a pool the longest.

  3. Remove the old liner and prep the floor

    With the old liner out, the floor is prepared and a liner pad laid before the new liner goes in, as Latham describes the job.

  4. Check the fit before filling

    If a new liner doesn't fit, don't fill the pool or cut in the fittings, Latham's measuring book says. Kept clean and dry, it can still be altered or sent back.

  5. Allow 1 to 3 days for the new liner

    A professional usually replaces an in-ground liner in 1 to 3 days, Latham says, with rain or added features stretching that out.

  6. Start up the water on a new liner

    Start-up procedures matter for a vinyl liner pool just as much as for a plastered one, so the surfaces last longer, a pool industry fact sheet says.

The drain step's clay warning applies in Redwood, where Houston Black clay sits at the town's center and New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing also handles pool liner replacement in Redwood. In New Braunfels, the drought plan doesn't list a liner change among its reasons to drain. A leak is one of them, and our pool leak detection page covers finding one. Ask New Braunfels Utilities before the old liner comes out.

Adding a ledge or steps during a liner replacement

A liner change is also the natural time to add a tanning ledge, custom steps or a built-in bench, Latham notes. Many of those need structural changes beneath the liner.

Not every pool is vinyl. A fiberglass pool, with its gelcoat (a factory-applied colored resin surface), is covered on our fiberglass pool resurfacing page. Plaster, concrete and fiberglass shells can also take pool painting.

Vinyl liner warranties: full and prorated years

Liner warranties come from the makers, and they often run in two stages. A full period comes first. Then comes a prorated period, in which the owner pays a rising share of the liner's list price as it ages.

Latham's terms

Latham's 20-year limited liner warranties open with either 3 or 5 full years. Its own in-ground liners carry a 25-year limited warranty: 5 full years, then 20 prorated. In the full years, a claim goes to the original dealer; in the prorated years, it's filed online with Latham.

Merlin's terms

Merlin covers leaks from seams separating for 20 years, or 25 on one of its lines, for the original owner of a home pool. The liner must be registered online within 30 days of installation, and the prorated warranty can't be transferred.

Its schedule shows how proration works. A liner replaced for defective workmanship costs nothing up to year 1, then 10% of the current list price in years 1 to 2. That rises to 80% in years 8 to 15 and 85% in years 15 to 20. Labor and freight aren't covered. Damage from excessive heat or cold, undiluted chemicals, rips, tears or punctures isn't covered either, and neither are staining and fading.

Both sets of terms are the makers' own, not a promise from us.

Vinyl pool liner questions

How much does it cost to replace a vinyl liner in a pool?

On 2025 national figures, liner replacement runs $2,000 to $7,500. Another 2025 national source puts a full replacement at $1,000 to $3,500 per 1,000 square feet, with $2,500 the average. New Braunfels and San Antonio-area companies don't publish liner prices, so for a local figure, ask New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing for a free estimate.

How much does a 20x40 vinyl pool liner cost?

On 2023 national averages, an in-ground liner for a 40' x 20' pool costs $7,500 to $8,000 installed. For comparison, the same source gives $3,700 to $4,200 for a 16' x 33' pool.

Can I put a new pool liner over the old one?

No. Latham strongly advises against laying a new liner on top of the old one, even though it might seem to save time. The old one comes out first.

Can I replace a pool liner myself?

It can cost you the warranty: Latham says a do-it-yourself installation can void it. Its measuring book also lists the errors people make most, from assuming standard sizes to adjusting the numbers. And Merlin names over-stressing at installation as one of the usual causes of early aging.

How many years does a pool liner usually last?

Latham's replacement page says 10 to 15 years from installation. Its vinyl pool page is less precise. It says up to 10 years with good water care, and a replacement about once every 10 years. It also says more than 15 years in ideal settings, and about 8 to 15 years for a well-kept liner.
