Pool Tile Cleaning and Calcium Removal in Zuehl, Texas

New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing offers pool tile cleaning and calcium removal in Zuehl, Texas, the rural community on Cibolo Creek in southwestern Guadalupe County. The job is clearing the hard, chalky scale that builds up where the pool water meets the tile. Zuehl lies inside Green Valley Special Utility District's service area, and state samples of the district's water test very hard.

There's no charge for an estimate, by phone or by form, whatever the hour. We'll talk through what the tile is made of, how thick the scale has grown, and whether the water needs lowering, since the district limits pool top-ups during a drought stage.

Three water sources and one very hard result

Zuehl is unincorporated, so no city runs its water. On the Texas Water Development Board's service-area map, the community falls inside Green Valley Special Utility District, which keeps its office at 605 FM 465 in Marion.

The district's 2025 water quality report, dated June 1, 2026, lists three sources:

  • water from Canyon Lake, carried by way of Lake Dunlap and treated at the Canyon Regional Water Authority's Lake Dunlap plant;
  • Carrizo and Wilcox aquifer groundwater, bought from the same authority's Wells Ranch;
  • the district's own Trinity and Edwards aquifer wells in Comal County.

The report prints no hardness figure. State records fill the gap: the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality tested treated water entering the district's system three times in the three years to October 6, 2026. All three samples were taken on January 15, 2025, and they read 286, 292 and 294 mg/L of total hardness.

The U.S. Geological Survey puts anything above 180 mg/L in its very hard class, so all three samples land there. They are the state's spot checks from a single day, not a number the district publishes. The survey itself says hardness questions for a particular home belong with the local water utility or health agency.

How very hard water builds scale on pool tile

Scale is mineral that the water can no longer hold dissolved. When calcium hardness, alkalinity or pH runs high, the National Plasterers Council says, pool surfaces scale and stain. Too much calcium lays mineral scale on the tile as well as the finish. Glass tile isn't spared: every surface in contact with the water can take on scale. On the tile it reads as a chalky white or light coat that mutes the color below, sometimes masking it entirely.

Reading the water's pull toward scale

The council's yardstick is the Langelier Saturation Index, a number that says whether water tends to drop calcium onto a surface or dissolve it away. On the council's start-up card, a positive index means mineral scaling, metal stains or discoloration. A negative one means leaching, etching or discoloration, where etching is the surface being eaten into.

Why the crust sits right at the water's edge

Water that evaporates leaves its calcium behind, says Latham, a pool maker, and it rates pH as a bigger influence on scaling than the calcium level itself. A tile maker calls a weekly brushing of the tile essential, with most attention on the waterline.

Taking scale off is a separate question from keeping it away, and the pool tile cleaning page takes it up: each removal method, from glass bead blasting to pumice, and which tiles it can harm.

Perryman's Crossing, Zuehl's store and the School post office

The site was once Perryman's Crossing, part of the Wood Road built before 1830 between Gonzales and San Antonio. Ferdinand Zuehl bought the land in 1870 and opened Zuehl's store in 1872, and the settlement took its name from the store.

Clemens School went up in 1883. When the post office opened in 1888 it was called School; it took the name Zuehl in 1906 and closed in 1910. By 1945 the town had seven stores and 175 people, and 49 residents were reported in 1990. The community was also the site of a private airfield. A family history on the City of New Berlin's website dates Redeemer Church in Zuehl to 1900.

Zuehl in the 2020 count

The community sits on Cibolo Creek, fourteen miles southwest of Seguin. The 2020 Census counted 399 people there and 167 homes, 159 of them occupied.

County rules for pool work in an unincorporated place

With no city government, the rules for a Zuehl property are Guadalupe County's. In a regulated flood zone, the county requires a Floodplain Development Permit from its Environmental Health floodplain manager before construction starts. Its list of examples includes a pool, a fence and a retaining wall. Building without one brings a stop-work order for the owner and the contractor on site. New or repaired septic systems need a permit too.

We found no county permit for work on a home pool outside a flood zone, and no county rule that mentions tile cleaning. If the property may be in a flood zone, ask Guadalupe County Environmental Health, at 310 IH 10 W in Seguin, before the work is booked.

If the water level has to drop

Some cleaning methods start by lowering the water just below the tile. Topping it back up then falls under Green Valley's drought rules, which limit pool filling to set days and hours from Stage 2 on. Its website named no current stage on October 6, 2026, so check with the district first.

Beyond the tile line

Scale on the tile often comes with other wear. Where the cement finish below it is stained or rough, an acid wash or a new finish may be the next question. Loose or cracked tiles call for resetting rather than cleaning. We'll say which of those a pool needs once we've seen it.

In Marion, where Green Valley keeps its office, New Braunfels Quality Pool Resurfacing also takes on pool painting in Marion.

How a tile cleaning job runs

General practice, step by step. The tile's maker and the media maker set the limits for each method.

  1. Tell us about the tile

Phone, or use the form whenever it suits you. Say what the tile is made of, if you know: glass, ceramic, porcelain or stone.

  2. Identify the scale deposit

Not all white crust is the same. One pool maker's acid-drop test separates the softer carbonate kind, which fizzes, from silicate, which doesn't react.

  3. Match the method to the tile

Some tile makers forbid blasting, pumice or acid on their products, so the maker's care guide comes before any tool.

  4. Lower the water only if needed

If the method calls for it, the level drops just below the tile, and the refill waits for the district's permitted hours.

  5. Clean the tile, then rebalance

With the scale off, the water balance gets checked, since cleaning removes the crust but not the chemistry that laid it down.
